SHINE Program

The SHINE Program is an after-school sports and character education program offered to youth in grades three through six in high-poverty neighborhoods throughout the Yuma community.

The program is designed to promote constructive activity during critical and typically unsupervised after-school hours. It teaches youth the fundamentals of team sports and facilitates a general understanding of various competitive games. The program also challenges individuals physically and mentally, fosters team spirit, promotes healthy competition, conditions discipline, develops citizenship and good sportsmanship, and builds youth of strong moral character.

The SHINE Program places a strong emphasis on physical fitness, exercise, nutrition, and overall health and wellness.

Arizona NAHRO honored the SHINE Program with its Program Innovation of the Year award. The program was also a finalist for Outstanding Afterschool Program in 2011.

How The Program Works

The seasonal program meets weekly during the school year from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Year-round activities are also offered at various times throughout the week for youth at one of the largest affordable housing developments in the City of Yuma.

A team of HACY volunteer coaches facilitates each session, incorporating educational discussions alongside athletic activities. Coaches guide youth through both the physical and character-development components of the program.

The 12 Principles Of The SHINE Program

Coaches incorporate educational discussion on these twelve core character principles throughout every session:

  • Understanding Self
  • Honesty and Trustworthiness
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Fairness
  • Kindness and Caring
  • Citizenship, Environmental Awareness, and Community
  • Courage and Perseverance
  • Self Discipline
  • Sportsmanship
  • Leadership
  • Health and Nutrition
